Expressing Thankfulness [Day 1]

Today I am grateful for my ability to find the good in people. I played a game (and am continuing to play) on Facebook and the main idea is for someone to send a random number of their choice to my inbox on Facebook and I post a status using that number to write to them. The idea is to tell them the good things about them. It's fun because it forces me to think in a certain way and sometimes it's hard for me, so I like to find the good in people and share it with them. Some friends I've known for a long time and I some I don't know as well, but I still did my best to be genuine.

Here are a few things I said about some people:

5,000,000,000: hey there little brother :) you are so fun and spunky and are always looking for a new adventure. You're so lively and wonderfully fantastic and I love all of your witty jokes. They make me giggle. I wish we lived a little bit closer so that we could hang out more often, but of course you are closer than you used to be :) miss you booger :)

13: Well, we've had our ups and downs in the last few months, but they were all worth it. I love how close we are and I love spending time with you. I'm sorry I've been so crazy lately. You've been a good friend to me and I love you. I love that you're so open with me and that you're so comfortable around me. I also love how funny you are and when I get you on those random tangents about things that you love. It's fun getting you to talk a lot because it doesn't happen very often. I also love that you're so spunky and full of life when you wanna be. It's magnificent. I love that you're so passionate about what you love and you treasure those that you love. You're incredible. Never forget it :)

2: You are, no joke, one of the FUNNIEST people I have ever met. And by far the best story teller. How do I know this? Because of how you made our ENTIRE group of like 20 people bust up laughing and die while rolling on the floor because we were all laughing so hard at your stories. One of the best dates ever. You always have a smile on and are doing your best to make everyone around you feel better when they're down. You are a sweetheart. You are going to be a wonderful missionary. Always remember to keep smiling and lifting others up, because that's what you do best. Love you kiddo :)

3212333: First of all, what you wrote about me - you SERIOUSLY made my day. In fact, you made my week. Nope, scratch that, my LIFE. That is seriously what I hope everyone will see in me. Of course I say stupid things sometimes, but I'm only human. Okay, this status isn't about me, it's about you. Whenever I think about you or see a post written by you on Facebook, I always subconsciously wish that we were better friends. I watched you all through high school wishing that I had gotten to know you better, but the opportunity just never came up. We never crossed paths much, but I know that people look up to you. I don't know what kind of challenges that you've overcome in your life thus far, but I can tell that you didn't make it to this point in your life by giving up. Keep on smiling and remember who you really are. Thanks for looking for and seeing the best in me (and everyone else around you). You are absolutely wonderful. If you ever need anything, I'm here for you, even if you just want to talk :)

Now with this girl ^^^, I need to post what she wrote about me, because well... you'll just have to read it...

7: You mentioned that we don't know each other very well. You're right - but let me share with you what I do know about you. You want to be good; you have a desire to be good and to spread good. You are one of the least judgmental people I know. You're friends with so many people; so many entirely different groups of people who are all so diverse. You have goodness within you that attracts so many others because you make them feel welcomed and good about themselves. I think you are darling. Thank you for accepting me.

Doesn't that just make your day? I almost started crying and the amazing thing with that, is that I hardly ever cry. I mean, I cry a lot more than I used to, but I usually don't get too emotional in that way. I don't know how you feel about people cloggin up your newsfeed with a bunch of random people that you don't know who they are, but in all seriousness, it's better than that crap that people have been posting now-a-days. It's positive, uplifting and I am so grateful for that. The more time we spend on being positive and optimistic, the less time we have for being negative and destructive of others. I'd say it's a good trade.

My Love for Letters

Besides the inconvenience of the time that it takes to be delivered, snail-mail truly is the most amazing thing ever. I really, truly and sincerely, LOVE writing letters. The only thing I love more than writing them, is receiving them. No joke. It's only the best thing in the world. So if you feel like you want to write me a letter, please feel free. If you feel as though you would like a letter, just pop a comment down below or message me on Facebook or something and tell me what kind of letter I can offer you. I write all sorts. Even if I've never written the kind of letter that you are in need of, I'm always willing to try something new. Just like having three religious classes. This will consist of five 50 minute classes each week between each of the three different classes. It'll be awesome.

So let me tell you exactly WHY I love writing and receiving letters. And why not make it into a list? Because I obviously LOVE lists and I obviously LOVE procrastinating studying for my midterm tomorrow... gah, let's face it, there's no hope for me.

Why I Love Giving and Receiving Letters

Giving:
  • I love writing letters because I am able to spend the time thinking about what to say to someone. Of course this is a lot different than speaking words because they are able to hold it and the tangible feeling is always more sentimental.
  • When I can help it, I prefer to hand-write my letters, but if I don't have the time to write out everything that needs to be said, I simply type the letter and send it off in an envelope, but that's only if I'm really in desperate need to save some time. (I could also spare some time on Facebook. . .anyone have any ideas to get rid of that bad habit?) Needless to say though, I print off the letter that I type and send it (either in an envelope if they are along distant away or in an envelope if they are close to home - I love envelopes. They're so convenient.) I try VERY hard not to email any letters if I can help it, (depending on who/what it's for) just because I know that I would prefer to hold the letter in my hands and read it rather than reading it off the computer screen. Of course the words and the meaning would be the same, but the tangibility just adds to the sentimentality of the entire letter.
  • I love being able to tell someone about my day through a letter. It's nice to know that someone cares enough to hear about what's going on in your life and it's also nice to let out a breather and be able to release some feelings through writing, especially if you know someone is on the receiving end and you're not just talking to yourself.
  • There's always a nice feeling when you are able to tell someone all the great things about themselves. It's amazing to know that someone was able to smile because of you.
  • There is just something about a pen in my hand and flowing across the paper. I have pretty nice handwriting and so it's fun to look back on it and look at it. Weird, I know. Don't judge.
  • It's nice to get exciting things in the mail too. I love sending pictures or using fun paper. I have recently sent several pictures as well as using yellow paper and neon orange paper. It just makes it all the more fun to send the letters.
  • I found the COOLEST stamps EVER. They're amazing. They have Disney characters on them. Disney-Pixar characters that is. They're pretty much the coolest thing EVER. :)
Receiving:
  • I feel as though nothing is better than receiving a letter. It's a reminder that someone cares about you enough to take the time out of their day to write you a letter/note letting you know that they were thinking about you and that they cared enough to express it to you.
  • I love looking in the mailbox every day to just find my parents bills and newpaper ads stuffed in the tiny compartment (not!) but I love being able to look through the envelopes and find one with my name on it. There's just something so fascinating about it. It's marvelous.
  • I love my name on the envelope because it just reassures me that it's mine and no one elses. (I'm kind of greedy that way. . .)
  • I love the thoughtfulness that is put into letters, just knowing that they were thinking of me the entire time while writing it.
  • I don't know about you, but I like unique things in letters. The most current letter that I've received in the mail - about half of it was written with a typewriter. Seriously SO AWESOME. It's not every day that you receive a letter typed up like it would have been in the 1800s through the early 1900s. Even though that was cool, I still prefer the hand-written letters. I think it's the handwriting to suffice as who they are when they're writing it. I don't know, nostalgia maybe?
Anyways, it's been nice sharing my fascination with letters to you. If you do, by chance, need a letter or want to send one over my way, I'd be more than happy to write you a thought or a happy inspirational message. I would also love to take what you write and read it many times over and treasure it forever. I would also like to inform you all that I protect my letters like I do my journals (all of which go into my dad's safe).

A List of Gratitude

This is what I'm grateful for from yesterday:

I got to. . .
  • sleep in.
  • write a blog post about Elder Erekson.
  • do my scripture study in the morning (which I've been working on)!
  • pick up the chub and head on over to the campus.
  • get my textbook reading done for the week.
  • go to class and sit next to my twin, Hannah :)
  • finish my homework and go eat lunch at Sensuous and chat with one of my childhood besties, Lexi, while doing so.
  • go pick up Drew, take him home, and rush to my house to hurry and gather everything for a photo shoot.
  • take pictures of the most wonderful family EVER, the Youngs (here's a sneak peek) :)

Aren't they wonderful looking? I thought so :)

  • Then I was able to enjoy dinner with them and their kids. It was delicious... I'm kind of wishing now that I hadn't given my leftovers to Dad when I got home last night... ah well. What's eaten is eaten. I won't ask for it back!

So I would vote that yesterday was a successful day and all in good company. As for today... I would consider it equally as brilliant. Today I...
  • had a midterm in my English class and it was pure extra credit. 29 points of extra credit and I got to choose which category the 29 points went in to and divide it however I wanted. It was freaking sweet!
  • got to sit and chat with Hannah, cause let's be honest, she's my favorite, before my history class. It's so great :)
  • got to listen to a lecture in my American Civ class about Mormons. The teacher told us that no one was allowed to proselyte during class. I laughed because that sounds like something I might consider doing. Okay, maybe not so much preach, but of course correct. ;)
  • got to hang out with Brit and Kinz for a little bit. After my last class and before institute I headed over to the grandparents where they were hanging out and started making spoon rings with them. (Shh... don't tell grandma we used her old silverware ;)) And just a shout out to Neal for helping us. I can't wait to see how they turned out!
  • went to Institute. I'm currently in a class called "Teachings of Joseph Smith" and let me tell ya, it's freaking awesome. I love it. Sometimes it's hard to go, but it's worth it every time.
  • signed up for TWO more institute classes. I feel as though the adversaries are fighting against me since I've been proclaiming my desire to serve a mission. Therefore, I shall fight back. Go. Fight. Win. I signed up for "Teachings of Thomas S. Monson" and it only seemed appropriate to sign up for a missionary prep class. Besides, every mission prep class is different and the one that my stake offers is only once a month. A girl needs a little more than that.
  • picked up the Drewmeister, took him home, and then made my way to the temple with my lovely neighbors. It's such a blessing to go every week. And it's super hilarious whenever they call Dallin "Sister" Openshaw. Seriously, at least four times in the past two weeks. It never fails. It was the funniest when the elder said it in the prayer without realizing it during the confirmation. Seriously, I had to cover my mouth because I was barely able to hold in the giggles. Of course after the prayer, both his sisters, as well as myself, busted into laughter and they asked what was wrong and joined in our laughter with us. They then redid the prayer, but seriously, SO funny.
  • got to see one of my best friends before he got set apart as a missionary. I rushed over there after the temple in order to catch him before he left. I knocked on the door and when they said to come in, I rushed in to meet Izak and ask if he had been set apart yet. When he said no, I rushed to give him a hug. Seriously, the best hug ever. I'm going back later in order to visit with him, along with other friends, but gah, I'm gonna miss him so much. He's my first CLOSE close friend that is leaving. It's so hard, but it's totally worth it. So about an hour ago, I got my last hug from Elder Erekson for more than 2 years (because I won't get home from my mish till a few months (give or take) after him). Love you buddy.

Confessions

I've come to a conclusion that will result in my happiness and leaves everyone else as happy as I WILL be. This may come across as silly and only half-serious, but I'm telling you right up front that this is about as serious as it comes!

  • I'm gonna take Brother Christiansen's advice and just become a nun until my 21st birthday. Hopefully I'll have my degree by then. I'll then go on a mission to where ever the Big Guy upstairs decides to send me and then I'll come home and make lots of money with my amazing photo skills and probably become a crazy dog lady (I hate cats) and/or a professional dog photographer. Despite the mission and all the wonderful experiences that I will have while serving the Lord, I will come home and probably become socially retarded because I'll live with dogs for the rest of my life. But guess what? They're loyal and that's all that matters.
  • I haven't been asked on a single date since I started college. Granted, I've only been through 5 weeks of college, but I still feel as though there should have been something that was supposed to happen. At least something exactly opposite of what I have been going through. But life isn't perfect, we all know that. Needless to say, I'm an impatient person.
  • Instead of actually going on dates, I've actually considered wearing a ring on my finger in order to avoid people from talking to me. This totally contradicts what I said before, but again, I'm not really in the mood to be social. And instead of going on dates, I'll just take all of that time that I would spend having an actual social life and take institute classes or something.
  • Since all of my friends are leaving on missions within the next 8-9 months, next summer will be very uneventful, especially with Toria going off to England to explore the world. (I'm totally happy for her, but I also rage in jealousy. . .) I've come to one conclusion - work at a summer scout camp! I actually would love this and would find it to be awesome. Then I can teach those obnoxious 12 year olds at a young age and possibly knock some sense into them. I mean the likelihood isn't very high, but it's worth a shot. Besides, they don't know they're immature. They're completely innocent! Anyways, so this option leaves me with open weekends to spend with the family, which in all honesty, is all I need at this point. Everyone else can just consider themselves disowned.
  • So if the whole scout camp idea doesn't work out, then I'm gonna have to find something else to do. Don't get me wrong, slappin' sammies around was fun while it lasted, but I am ready for BIGGER and better things. Possibly an internship of some kind? Or I could totally pack my summer with photo shoots? Well, either way, I'll probably do that anyways. I don't know, maybe I'll try out retail or something. I've always had a secret desire to work at Forever XXI for some reason. Don't judge me. Just go with it.
So I'm hoping that this was a healthy and round-about way to deal with stress and emotions. I feel like it wasn't angry at all and actually quite light-hearted. It definitely helped me get my mind off of things. Quite honestly, this week is not a good one. Can't wait for tomorrow and Sunday though. THOSE will be great days where I'll get to see some amazing old friends and reminisce the old times. I'll be sad to send off Izak and Nik, but they will be fantastic missionaries. Monterrey and Chicago will be extremely blessed to have them around for 2 years! (:

Tomorrow I get to go to work early (not really looking forward to that though. . .), coming home, getting ready and looking wonderful, going to get our family pictures taken (if I can actually decide what to wear. . .) Then graciously going to take pictures of a group that will be going to Maeser's Homecoming Dance (super excited for that) and then ending the night with my wonderful friends Brett (haven't seen him since June, and will probably knock him over when I see him) and Kaden by attending a concert at the Velour where Ruth will be performing. Seriously so excited. And Brett said that he would take me on a date when he gets home. Well, he's coming home. So perhaps I shall wait till after that date to become a nun. . . hm. . .

Trying to keep life as good as possible. Stay strong friends.

Thank You

Thank you to those who have made my life just a little bit easier. More specifically to those who listen to me rant and go off on tangents when I need to figure something out. (FYI: The best way for me to figure out something for myself is for me to talk about it with someone. I solve a lot of my problems and relieve a lot of stress by just talking to someone. Even if they don't say anything, they just have to listen.) Thanks also to those who have had to listen to it countless times, especially when I get extremely anxious and frustrated, namely, my mother. She's always willing to listen, even if she's not really listening, but seems like she is because she's so tired. My momma works really hard for our family and does a lot. And it doesn't help that she's been pretty sick the last couple of weeks. (Even though it frustrates me further when I ask her for advice and she tells me to decide for myself, and then I decide for myself and she tells me that I need to do the opposite. So frustrating.) I love you momma. ♥

Thank you to my dad who will sit and watch Big Bang with me and eat a ginormous cucumber with me. Really, we have some good times watching television believe it or not ;) And my dad gives really good hugs too. I love them. And I love you paps. Even when we have "being an adult" talks. I hate them, but I still love you!

Thank you to Carly for spending part of her evening with me. I miss this girl dearly. We can talk about anything, and after tonight, I am reassured of this. ;) Dinner was amazing, and I love you. Enjoy the rest of your semester and I shall see you at Christmas.

Thank you to Brittnie for working for me when I decide I want to go out of town and not work that weekend. I made it really easy for her to slice tonight since she was already working 10 hours beforehand. I love you and thanks for always making me smile, even when it's accompanied by blushing. ;)

Thank you to Drew for always being there for me, caring for me, and loving me more than anything. I love you, even when you're a pain in the... well, you know. :) I love our exciting adventures up the canyon, at Iceberg and well, just hanging out with your family or losing bets when we play Phase 10. You're the best friend ever chub.

Thank you to Lisa, who is just simply amazing. She is always willing to let me in her home and is always feeding me delicious new foods. Like salmon burgers! Have you ever had one? Didn't think so. They're awesome. And she looks like Lynda Carter from Wonder Woman. If you haven't, go and check out page 44 of the most recent Utah Valley Magazine. She's in it and she's lovely. :) I love Lisa, and that's all there is to it. She's like a second mom. In fact, maybe one day she will be. ;) Haha, hey, it could happen!

Thank you to all those who have been recommending me to other people to take photos for events in their life. Holy tamoles, it's been incredible. Because of references, I'm doing bridals tomorrow, a wedding next month and potentially engagements in the next few weeks. I so love this and I so appreciate those who tell people about my stuff. I seriously love you. Not only do I love doing it, but the little extra cash for a struggling college student is more than appreciated as well. (Namely Chelsea, Kinzie and Kylie:))

Thank you to my sister. She really is one of the most caring people in this world. I know I'm not the best sister in the world, but I really do care. I know it doesn't always seem like that. We fight a lot and we say dumb things to each other and really know how to piss each other off, but I definitely have to say that when we are both in good moods, we are quite hilarious.

*Reading Calvin and Hobbes*
Sav (reading as Calvin): Dad! Can I have a flamethrower?
Dad (in bathroom): Sure!

Seriously thank you to those of you who have just been there with a smile and appreciate me for who I am. I seriously couldn't survive my life without them. Doing fifteen credits, working a part-time job, and handling a social life is no easy task and I could never do it on my own.

I guess you could call this my early gratitude list for Thanksgiving this year. Ha, perhaps I'll do a post every day in November, each with something/someone that I'm grateful for. Should be exciting. Haha, especially considering I can hardly keep up with my scripture study, let alone a blog. ;)

OH, and one more thing... pretty sure I just did the hardest thing ever. I'm pretty positive that I finished the Book of Mormon tonight. Pretty sure. Gonna have to check when I get home. I'm just one more experience away from getting my young women's medallion. Goodness gracious. It's about time...

Reasons to Blog

  • Sharing Stories
    • I love sharing the most random stories. They make me laugh and I like to think that they make others smile too. For instance, today after I got off work and went to the store and stuff I went to the last part of mutual just to visit and make an appearance. (I needed it. It was fun.) And then mostly everyone had gone and Amber was taking my sister and I, as well as my neighbor's home and she was chatting with Carla. I asked if I could have an apple, (Actually, my exact words were, "I don't want to seem like a mooch, but can I have an apple?") and she said yes, so she pulled one out of the bowl and I noticed that there was an unusual looking stem on the apple. The stem started to move and before I realize it, I'm screaming like a little girl and jumping away into the other room as fast as I can. There was a spider... on the apple. It was scary. I'm sorry, but apple stems don't normally move. I'm sure you can understand right? Well, we certainly got a good laugh out of that.

  • Sharing Pictures
    • What I love about pictures is that they're fun and vibrant and add some snazz to the blog. They contrast the simple layout too. Haha :) They also normally come with a story and some quotes. Anyways, here's an example:

This picture was drawn by Agnes in tech this morning when we were talking about lighting and costumes. It was interesting to find out that when you put a green light on a magenta dress, it will turn black. Interesting huh? Well, this picture is Abby! Haha, Agnes said, "I'm not good at drawing pelvic thrusts!" This is Abby "being the diva she is". I don't know. I guess you might not think it funny unless you were there, but let me tell you, if you were there, it was hilarious!

  • Sharing Inspiration
    • I'm not quite sure I have a current example of this one, but I love sharing all kinds of stories (obviously), but some of my favorite are those that have the capability of having a more personal connection to others. I shared this scripture on Facebook the other day:
‎2 Nephi 10:23 - "Therefore, cheer up your hearts and remember that ye are free to act for yourselves -- to choose the way of everlasting death or the way of eternal life."

I read that a few nights ago, and it's stuck with me ever since. I'm glad I have it posted everywhere because I've had a really rough day. I can act however I want and I can choose to be whatever, so why wouldn't I choose to be happy? Why should I let others get in the way of my happiness. Next time I'm going to shove them over and walk on past (metaphorically of course). I shared it on Facebook and then my good friend, Kiara Pratt, posted this as her status (which made me really happy):

"So I have been having a challenging couple of weeks with school and all and it's not fun when you're grades down but I read this [scripture] on my dear friend Savanna Skinner's page...Thank you for helping me remember to stay positive my friend! You are amazing!"

Kiara, thanks for letting me be inspiring. It helped me a lot to boost your mood, even for just one day. I love you and thank you for your kind words.

  • To VENT
    • Sometimes these aren't as enjoyable for me to read, but I know that some people don't mind reading them, so every once in a while I'll share a personal upset feeling or two. But due to my need to remain positive, I don't feel it appropriate to talk about negative things right now. I'm trying to stay positive.
  • To Procrastinate and/or Cure Boredom
    • Let's be honest, of course there's something better I could be doing with my time (e.g. sleeping). HA, of course, but am I? Nope. In fact, I'm slowing dwindling to unconscienceness as I'm typing and slowly convincing myself that I'm too lazy to go and jump in the shower right now. Well, I had better go and take care of that so that I can go to sleep.
What are some of the reasons you blog?

Let's Review, Shall We?

So having had a junior year bucket list, here are the things that I accomplished (bold), things that didn't get accomplished (italics) and then of course those things that are right there in the middle (both).

Here's the list:
  • Go to every dance (Homecoming, Sadies, Bargain Ball, Preference, Prom and Morp - IN THAT ORDER!)
    • It was so much fun. I loved going with all the guys that I did. (Some more than others...)
  • Ask a football player out on a date
    • Um... yeah. It was good, but not the best choice I have ever made.
  • Be elected Student Body President
    • Not exactly. I was all for it, and then I decided to run for something else. So I'm on student council. Yay :)
  • Reach out of my comfort zone to make lots of friends and meet a lot of new people
    • I felt as though I made a lot of friends this year. And not just petty relationships that will never last. I have some really close friends now that I'm only gonna get closer to during senior year.
  • Make Footloose a success, and become as reliable as I can be
    • Footloose was stressful, but SOOO much fun and definitely worth all of the time it took. I really enjoyed every little bit of it. (And bossing people around was lots of fun too :) )
  • Get an A in Calculus (come on... at least one term...)
    • Oh brother. Hardest class EVER. I hated that class. Have some good memories with it, but all it brought was pain and misery. Stupid B-'s all year...
  • Take summer school to get ahead and so I'm not miserable Senior year... haha
    • Not even. Just had to make a few sacrifices in order to fill up my FULL schedule for senior year. It won't be difficult though. I promise I won't be miserable at all.
  • Go to every dance with someone different
    • Definitely a success. It was a total blast. Izak, Tanner, Andrew, Kaden, Jordan and Alex. So much fun.
  • Get Driver's License
    • That was exciting. The idea was to get it before my permit expired. I definitely made it happen.
  • Get A's and Honors credit in seminary all year
    • Ha, yup. Still have some stuff to do, but it shouldn't be too difficult :)
  • Pass Calculus AP test at the end of the year with a 4 or a 5
    • I shall let you know in July... when we get our scores... :P I felt good about it though.
  • Actually TAKE the ACT
    • I will be on Saturday... wish me luck!
  • Finish the Book of Mormon
    • Nope. That's been pushed to a summer goal. And I wrote it down. And it's going to happen.
  • Finish Harry Potter Series (I'm on Book 6!!!)
    • Oh yeah. Definitely on my favorite books list now.
  • Make Show and Chamber
    • Nope, I didn't even try out. Had a change of plans and I'm taking photography instead. I'm gonna miss choir a TON, but it'll be totally worth it and I have a lot of memories associated with choir. No worries. I'm gonna miss it a lot, but at the same time, I'm gonna love being able to enjoy all the concerts. :)
  • Get braces off
    • Urgh... We're shooting for July.

Things to do to keep life interesting:

Sometimes I find that even Mr. Broadbent can find funny things to show the class. Recently, he's shown us some comics or even a video or two at the start of class that has to do with physics... or not. Sometimes, they're just random and pointless, but awesome. Just like yesterday! Yesterday he pulled up a powerpoint slide with the title: "Things to do to keep life interesting:" I thought to myself, this ought to be interesting. Well, it was freaking hilarious. Just saying. Therefore, I shall share them with you. Anybody interested in doing them with me, you just tell me when and where and I'll be there! :)

  • Sit in your parked car with sunglasses on and point a hair dryer at passing cars. See if they slow down.
  • Every time someone asks you to do something, ask if they want fries with that.
  • Order a diet water whenever you go out to eat, with a serious face.
  • Specify that your drive-through order is 'to go'.
  • When the money comes out of the ATM, scream, "I WON! I WON!"
  • When leaving the zoo, start running towards the parking lot yelling,"Run for your lives! They're loose!"
Well, once I have accomplished these...
I'll find something else entertaining to do
and then I'll be sure to tell you ALL about it.

Oh, and PS I got a cool lookin' keychain at the Drama Banquet tonight for being stage manager at the beginning of the year. I felt special. :)
